This is the holy grail of overlooked series that is so little remembered, it doesn't even qualify for cult status. Everything about it was consistently top drawer from episode one, unlike virtually every other great show I can think of. No wobbly, awkward start here.

Vengeance Unlimited is a TV series broadcast during 1998-1999 on ABC which lasted for just one season of sixteen episodes. The show starred Michael Madsen as Mr. Chapel, a mysterious and pragmatic character keen on serving justice to those who have been ignored by the law (similar to The Equalizer). Many blame the demise of the show on its timeslot, which placed it opposite the wildly popular Friends.

In a world where bad things happen to good people, and bad people get away with murder, we need a friend like Mr. Chapel.

Michael Madsen is Mr. Chapel. No first name. No back-story. You'll never know who he is or where he came from. But if your life has been shattered by tragedy, you don't care. Because maybe the police didn't protect you, maybe the courts couldn't help you. No one would listen. You've lost everything, even hope. And that's when he steps from the night and into your life with an offer.

The man who murdered your wife and walked out of court laughing will go to jail; the embezzler who took your life savings will be broke; the cop who framed you will wake up a wanted man. Whatever they did to you, he will do to them; whatever sin drove them to their crime will be the sin that drives them to their knees. The price? One favor. Payable on demand at any future date in service of the next victim whose life is broken in half. The catch? Never say no. Mr. Chapel doesn't like people who break their promises.

Which is why Mr. Chapel likes KC Griffin (Kathleen York), a paralegal in the District Attorney's office. She is a former victim who feeds Mr. Chapel information on the guilty who have gone free, or the innocent who've been wrongly accused. In spite of her fascination and fondness for this enigmatic man, she's determined to keep him from going too far over the edge.
